Chapter 33
Online & More
I was making another cup of coffee at the coffee maker when someone said, âHurry up. Iâm desperate.â
Mona looked like hell. The minute I filled my cup, she gently but firmly shoved me aside to make one for herself.
âHe snored louder than a buzz saw,â she said irritably.
I tried not to laugh, but failed. âBroken nose and all?â
In response, she gave me an arched brow.
I returned one of my own. âWhatâd you expect? Heâs drugged all the time. And last night, all the wine he had. He shouldnât have drank to begin with. You didnât stop him.â
âBad enough I listen to his moaning,â she countered.
âI havenât heard complaints on those fringe benefits.â
âWell, he did keep me distracted previously...â
âSeriously, you think heâs as harmless as he lets on?â
âI thought about that and dug deeper.â
âHow, if he gave you an alias?â
âI dug into his wallet,â she said grinning.
âGood move.â
âShould have done it sooner, but my attention was...â
âI know, distracted before his unfortunate accident.â
âNo reason to check Teddy further after he came clean to Martha about why he was here. Plus, at the hospital his insurance card went through and the nurse kept calling him Mr. Pirelli. But after last night at the dinner table, I got curious to know more about him. I canât explain it, but something didnât feel right. So I decided to tear apart his wallet. Initially he told me his name was Teddy Pirelli.â
âAnd now you know that wasnât exactly true.â
âHis license read Anton T. Pirelli.â
âThereâs something more, isnât there?â
âSomething more interesting.â
âWhat?â
âHe hails from Tonyâs neighborhood.â
âAre we talking same town?â
âYes. Iâm thinking possibly connected like Tony.â
âWell, he hasnât done anything yet, has he?â I asked.
âThatâs just it. No. Plus, I asked around and made a few side calls to my people. No convictions under that name.â
âHe could just be a naïve actor/model like he claimed.â
Mona laughed. âWho got innocently caught up in this?â
âNot likely, huh? Especially after he lied to you.â
Like Iâve said before, I didnât know, nor did I want to know who Monaâs people were. As long as I was never arrested in the process, I was good to go.
âOh!â said Mona. âMiss Scarlett complained youâre out of Southern Comfort. Want me to go buy some for you?â
âWould you, Mona? That would be great.â
âYou do realize youâd have to babysit you-know-who.â
I had books to inspect... âWhen are his next pills due?â
âDonât worry,â said Mona. âI just gave them to him.â
